Sussex Beds is sponsoring a Charity Barn Dance at the Masonic Hall in St Leonards on Saturday the 2nd February in aid of Cancer Research UK.
A Disease That Affects Many
It is estimated, that at some point one in two of us will suffer from cancer in our lifetimes.
‘Like many families across the country, we know what it is like to have a family member fighting the disease’ says Paula Pickering, Social Media Assistant at Sussex Beds, and the person behind the Charity Barn Dance.
Recently, one of the family’s younger members, who is just 10 years old, was diagnosed with childhood leukemia.
‘Their fight is one that has touched all our lives’, she continues.
The Sussex Beds family are also aware of the devastation that cancer can cause when people lose their fight against the disease.
‘Sadly, recently, our Logistics director lost his dad to pancreatic cancer. Cancer touched our lives in a big way last year and continues to do so in 2019, which is why we have decided to support this worthy cause’ says Paula.
Funding research is fundamental in the fight against cancer. And Cancer Research UK is one of the organisations leading the way in this area. Last year, the charity supported research worth £413m. They were targeting specific areas such as lung cancer (£42m), breast cancer (£44m) and colorectal cancer (£42m).
Despite being the second leading cause of death globally, in the UK the picture is getting better when it comes to cancer survival. Thanks in part to organisations like Cancer Research UK-the cancer survival rate continues to improve every year. It has doubled in the last 40 years here at home.
Still Work To Do
But, despite this improving picture, survival rates in the UK continue to lag behind those of other European countries. Recent analysis of data from across 23 European countries found that the UK had the second-to-last survival rate for breast, colorectal, lung, prostate and ovarian cancers. More work and research is needed.
St Leonards Barn Dance
By donating £15 for a ticket you will be joining the Sussex Beds family at this event. All the money donated goes directly to Cancer Research UK (and you can gift aid it too!). There will be music from the Spinning Jenny Band, a charity auction with donations from local businesses and a supper.
‘We’re all going to be there’ says Paula, ‘so why not come along too! It’s a great way to support your local community and help get behind this most worthy of causes’
